The Interfraternity Council will be holding its annual Formal Recruitment process June 22-24, 2018.

Summer Formal Recruitment is a relatively new initiative started at KU in 2002. This initiative is an opportunity for Potential New Members (PNM) to meet chapters on campus and hopefully be extended a bid by the end of the Formal Recruitment Process.

Our formal recruitment process is much different from what you will see at other Universities. Instead of having Formal Recruitment during the first week of the fall semester, Formal Recruitment takes place annually around the end of June. It is usually split up into 3 rounds. Chapters will offer extensions to PNMs to return to the subsequent rounds. After the 3rd (and final) round, Chapters have the opportunity to extend Bids to the PNMs. A Bid is a formal invitation to join a Fraternity.

Below is the tentative schedule for Formal Recruitment this year.

Check-in @ Downs Hall:                                                      4:00PM-6:00 PM

Dinner:                                                                                  5:00PM-6:00PM

Potential New Member Orientation:                                  6:00PM-6:30PM

Chapter Expo:                                                                      7:00PM-9:30PM

There is a freshman orientation scheduled to occur this day as well. Orientation related events will conclude at 5:00PM at the latest. Therefore, you will have enough time to check-in and eat dinner prior to the beginning of recruitment related events.

Potential new members will arrive at Downs Residence Hall (1517 W. 18th Street) and check-in prior to moving in for the weekend. Once a PNM has unpacked, there will be dinner located at the Residence Hall dining Facility. Following dinner, we will talk about the weekend, and split everyone up into their recruitment groups. Later that night we will start our first event. The first event is called the "Chapter Expo," and is set up similar to a career fair. Every chapter will host a table in our Ballroom and PNM's are free to visit any chapters they wish. Later that night Chapters extend invitations to PNMS and PNM's get to choose up to ten of those invitations to accept for events on the 2nd day.

Breakfast will be provided in the morning and then PNMs will begin the second event. All meals will be provided. The second event will consist of 10 rounds of chapter visits. Each round will involve visiting one of the 10 chapters previously chosen at the end of the Chapter Expo. Fraternities with chapter facilities will be hosting housing tours at their respective locations, and Fraternities without chapter houses will be located in a room at the Union. Following the conclusion of all of the rounds, chapters will invite PNM's back for the 3rd event and PNM's will decide which they'd like to return to. There will be a limit of 3 chapters that you must choose to visit for rounds on the 3rd and final day.

Following breakfast, PNMs will once again conduct chapter visits with 3 of the chapters chosen from the prior round. The rounds are slightly longer during the 3rd Event to allow for greater conversation between PNMs and chapter representatives. After the conclusion of 3rd Event, chapters will have the option to extend Bids to any PNM's they desire. PNM's will then have up to 14 days to sign any bids received, but after that point in time the bid card is considered void.

The rounds of 3rd and final Event and will conclude in the afternoon so that out of state participants will have enough time to catch flights back home. Last year, PNMs were informed of bids that they had received from chapters between 2PM-3PM. Check-out occurred from 3PM-4PM. The schedule of events will most likely be the same this year.

Attire for the weekend: Casual- Please dress comfortable. The temperature has ranged from 75-95 degrees in years past, and no one wants you to be miserable. Shorts and a t-shirt are perfectly acceptable, and there is no expectation to dress up whatsoever. However, if you still wish to dress up more: a polo shirt, khaki shorts, and boat shoes are a solid way to look nice without breaking a sweat.

List of Participating chapters

As wonderful as all of this sounds, The Formal Recruitment process is by no means perfect. And it may not allow for certain persons to truly get a feel for the Fraternities on campus. But it does offer a unique opportunity for PNM's to experience some of what IFC Fraternity life has to offer. It is specifically helpful to those that don't have the ability/opportunity to participate in the Spring Informal recruitment process.

At the end of the day, the Formal Recruitment process is extremely useful, but still the most Prominent form of Recruitment for IFC at the University of Kansas is the Spring Informal Process. If you can participate in Spring Informal, I would encourage you to do so in addition to attending the Summer Formal Process.

We know that all of this is quite confusing, but we have confidence that if you put the time in you will find a Fraternity that is right for you.

If neither Spring Informal or Summer Formal Recruitment work out for you with your time schedule, Fall Informal Recruitment might better fit your needs.

But the best advice that can be offered is to have a good attitude and an open mind towards all chapters you get to visit with.
